Salquin to the Rescue by Rosie Reay with illustrations by Candice McMullan

Salquin to the Rescue by Rosie Reay with illustrations by Candice McMullan

Stop the presses! The wait is over! Salquin to the Rescue has just been released as an EBook at Foden Press! The 2nd book in the popular The Chimona Chronicles series is written by children’s author Rosie Reay and illustrated by Candice McMullan. The story takes us back to the Okanagan Lakeside Resort in beautiful British Columbia, Canada to see all our friends from the 1st book in the series, How Kelvyn Got His Name, and to meet some new friends.

The story begins with a Thunder storm rolling in over the Okanagan Lake. It’s getting dark and all the boaters are starting to come in and return the boats they’ve rented for the day. Everyone is accounted for except a vacationing family from Scotland, and this sparks a brave plan to try and rescue them — if they can find them in the dark during a storm! But Chimona and Kelvyn are on the scene, and so is their new Blue Raven friend Salquin, a young First Nations boy with a knack for tracking and a trusty canoe. In addition to the search and rescue, a mystery is afoot. Another boat is missing, and no one can figure out who took it or where it could possibly be! Will the OLKs be able to find the family in time? And will the mystery of the missing boat ever be solved? And who do you think will solve the mystery?

This is a lovable story about furry, feathered, finned and human friends who all live around the lakeside community coming together to help a lost family. Kids will love reading about the intrepid Chimona, Kelvyn and Salquin and their adventures and mystery solving techniques. Great for travel reading and capturing the imaginations of the young reader and grandparents alike, Salquin to the Rescue is sure to please and entertain! Kids will enjoy gazing at the beautiful illustrations by talented artist Candice McMullan and will enjoy the bonus, full length poem Firelogs Burning. This original poem is also written by Rosie Reay, and poems are a unique trademark in The Chimona Chronicles series of books. Want to learn more about your favorite characters? It’s simple! Summer Fun, A Heat Wave and a Holiday

Every once in a while, we all could use a holiday, and boy, did I need one. So, I took a wee one and just had some summer fun with the Youngling.

Drawing,

I Love My Family Illustration by Youngling

picnicking,

Me Love Cookies! Yum! Yum! Yum!

taking pics of the Stanley Park wildlife,

Feed Me!

Feed Me!

and going to Kerrisdale Play Palace (my pic’s blurry, I was laughing so hard! They should have a place like this for adults!).

Adults Need A Place Like This To Destress_Imagine the Fun!

Adults Need A Place Like This To De-Stress_Imagine the Fun!

We watched the moon rise over English Bay

and enjoyed the Celebration of Light (Spain won BTW. Their theme was Heaven & Hell. Simply magnificent!)

while listening to beautiful music, (this happens to be one of my most favorite pieces of music and one of my most favorite movies, A.I. . This was part of Spain’s music for the fireworks display. Click on the music link above to hear another favorite piece of music of mine that was also part of the display! And yes, you have seen the movie that made this piece of music famous — again. Nice pick for trailer music!)

suffered through a heat wave (we’re still suffering by the way!)

Said the Youngling to Me_Hey Mom we're roasting like chickens right?

Said the Youngling to Me_Hey Mom we are roasting like a couple of chickens right?

— and let me tell you, Vancouver could be renamed Hades if it wasn’t so much fun — and visited the many spray and splash parks in Vancouver.

I am going to splash you Mom!

I am going to splash you Mom!

The Granville Island Water Park was the best and we will definitely be going there again next summer.

And, of course, I watched movies,

Are you surprised really?

Are you surprised really?

and re-read my favorite books. (Are you watching Pillars of the Earth on Starz?)

My old beat up copy of Pillars of the Earth_Revisiting this book 15 years later I understand a whole lifetime more than I did the 1st time around!

My old beat up copy of Pillars of the Earth_Revisiting this book 15 years later I understand a whole lifetime more than I did the 1st time around!

I love this book!

I love this book!

I also managed to write, just a little. I even went to a wedding! (The first one in 6 years, WOW! And it was beautiful.)

I did all those things around the house that needed doing,(I love this book, too!)

Look inside if you dare!

Look inside if you dare!

I dreamed about taking a cake decorating course (fondant, YUM!),

Dont U just want to eat it?

Dont U just want to eat it?

and tried to enjoy the now and quiet my busy, frazzled mind.

This is not a good look.

This is not a good look.

And now I am back.

Happiness is writing and it is who I am.

Happiness is writing and it is who I am.

I hope you had a wonderful time while I was away, and if you haven’t manged to take a break, try and take one — even if it is a wee one — I know you deserve it! :D

Millan Foundation Spay and Neuter PSA

A couple nights ago the Millan Foundation Spay and Neuter PSA launched on the National Geographic Channel. In case you missed it, here it is.

Like Cesar Millan, I agree with spaying or neutering your pet. It’s part of being a responsible pet owner. Every second an animal is abandoned at an animal shelter because there aren’t enough forever homes for them. Every second.

Every year, animal shelters in the US euthanize nearly 4 million dogs and cats. In Canada, the number is nearly the same. That is approximately 8 million innocent lives lost, and that number only represents the deaths we are aware of. The actual number is probably much worse. Unwanted animals die from exposure, disease, starvation, poisoning, and even cruelty. It is not a fate that any living creature deserves.

So please, spay or neuter your pet. Don’t add to the number of lives lost. Help prevent it.

Youngling’s Pick of the Week!

I Recommend It!

I Recommend It!

This week it’s a double whammy! The Youngling recommends How To Train Your Dragon the movie and the books! She really liked them both. The movie was really engaging, funny and heartwarming. It really captured my Youngling’s imagination. Ever since she saw the movie, she can’t stop drawing, painting and pretending to be a “baby” dragon. Her favorite dragon was of course Toothless, the Night Fury.

The I Can Read series of books from Harper are great for kids. My Youngling was very eager to get the book after seeing the movie.

She gives both the big thumbs up!

Change Is Inevitable

It Wasn't Me!

It Wasnt Me!

They say a writer is tortured when they are not writing. I believe that to be true. That being said, more writing is coming and very soon. I have a very cool interview with Daniel Henshaw arriving very, very soon. Also, there will be some changes happening with The Scribe’s Desk. Not too sure yet exactly what or how, but rest assured, change is inevitable!

Also, exciting news on an upcoming book release! I am very stoked about that one!

More to come soon! Stay tuned!

2010 Winter Olympics In Vancouver Is Daunting for the Film Industry

2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics Logo

2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics Logo

The 2010 Winter Olympics is in full swing in Vancouver and everyone is caught up by the fever of Olympian sport. Well, not everyone. A lot of filming usually goes on in Vancouver, but not during the Winter Olympics. The film industry is daunted by the monster that is the Games, they know they can’t compete when it comes to precedence right now, and it would be difficult to navigate the city while the Olympic traffic fills Vancouver to bursting. Transportation is definitely a nightmare, and logistics would become an even more Herculean feat than it would be in a game free zone. Imagine if the film crew needed an umbrella, where would they find one? They’d probably have to pry it from the fingers of a tourist or spectator. A daunting task indeed. But, if you’re planning on working the Games into the show, maybe the Games don’t appear too daunting. Or, if you need shots of a big crowd, filming the sports crazed tourists flooding the streets of Vancouver until way past my bedtime is the perfect answer for all your crowd shot needs. Or, if you want to do a documentary on protesters protesting protesters, Vancouver during the 2010 Winter Olympics is the place to be! Go Team Canada! Wooohoo!

~P.S.~ Look how close you can get to the Olympic Cauldron. Awesome. Only in Canada.

The world’s attention is focused on the horribly, devastating earthquake in Haiti. Please don’t forget to donate, and there are many reputable organizations to send help through like the Red Cross. George Clooney is having a telethon to raise money to help the people of Haiti aptly named Hope For Haiti. Bono, Justin Timberlake, Sting, Christina Aguilera, and Alicia Keys are some of the names that will be performing at this worldwide concert event.

Wyclef Jean

Wyclef Jean will be cohosting this event and the goal is to reassure Haiti that the whole world is paying attention to their dire need. With almost 40 stars rumored to be participating, I’m sure that a lot of people will pay attention. Remember every dollar counts, so give anything you can. Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant Good Reading?

Cirque Du Freak The Vampire's Assistant_KidsTurnCentral

Cirque Du Freak The Vampire~s Assistant_KidsTurnCentral

Did you know that Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant is a book first published in 2000? Apparently it is Book 2 in The Saga of Darren Shan. Interestingly enough, these books are also written by who else? Darren Shan. (a.k.a. Darren O’Shaughnessy which is his real name, and his other pen name is D.B. Shan F.Y.I.)

And here I thought The Vampire’s Assistant was just another mind-to-script-to-screen movie hopping on the vampire hype wagon taking full advantage of the fang fever sweeping the world! I guess it’s good to have fangs these days!

Will you go see it? Or will you, like me, wait for that other fang-tabulous movie that is on the near horizon? The countdown has begun, BTW!
